Following three years of service as Vice President and Chair of Student Auditions, Justin steps into the role of President of the NATS-NYC Chapter, effective May 2024. NATS-NYC is New York City’s chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). The organization promotes excellence in vocal performance and teaching in all styles of music by offering opportunities to further knowledge and skills in the areas of voice education, voice science, musician wellness and practical applications of scientific research to musical performance.

Justin presents his voice research at the Pan-European Voice Conference in Santander, Spain, this September, alongside co-author, Kevin Wilson. His paper, “A Vowel Driven Approach to Register Manipulation in Contemporary Musical Theatre Singing,” addresses a vowel driven model which accounts for both laryngeal and pharyngeal registration.

Justin presents voice research at the Asian Conference on Arts & Humanities this May. His paper, “The Impact of Vocal Fold Lesions and Dysphonia on the Passaggi of a Commercial Music Singer,” addresses perceptual variability and rate of perceived vocal exertion of a commercial singer diagnosed with vocal fold lesions and dysphonia.

During the spring semester, Moniz presented lectures and masterclasses at The Boston Conservatory and Berklee and Teachers College, Columbia University. Topics addressed included vocal efficiency, sustainability, cross training, and entrepreneurship in the arts.

Justin’s article, “Investigative Listening as a Praxis for Technical Evaluation and Corrective Procedure,” is featured in the May/June Issue of the Journal of Singing. The article addresses how investigative listening can support effective teaching practices in the voice studio setting and processes surrounding the diagnosis and correction of vocal faults, communicating corrective solutions, and student self-regulation.

This April, Justin returned to The Town Hall in NYC as an esteemed finals judge for both the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella and the International Championship of High School A Cappella. For the past ten years, Justin has served as a judge a various Varsity Vocal competitions across the United States. Millions of people saw the true story of the ICCA tournament in the hit movie Pitch Perfect (and the follow-up story in the sequels, Pitch Perfect 2 and Pitch Perfect 3)— now the highest-grossing music comedy film series ever.

Justin’s article, “Contemporary Vocal Repertoire Considerations for the Classical Singer,” is featured in the March/April 2024 Issue of the Journal of Singing. The article addresses the exploration of contemporary vocal repertoire for the classical singer through assessment methods rooted in evidence-based practice.

Directed by Original Broadway Cast Member and NYU Professor Ted Sperling, The Steinhardt School production of TITANIC is sure to provide an evening of romance, adventure, and intrigue on a grand scale. The first full musical production in the state-of-the art Iris Cantor Theater, this production will boast a cast of 30 singers and a 33-piece pit orchestra under the baton of Dr. Justin John Moniz. Performances run 2/9-2/12.

Justin was invited to be one of eight headliners for the 2024 NATS Winter Workshop, to be held at Manhattan School of Music, January 6-8, 2024. Justin’s session, “Constructive Collaboration: Pedagogic Tactics for Building a Unique & Sustainable Vocal Footprint with the CCM Singer,” will equip voice teachers with pedagogic tactics to assist in both technical assessment and collaborative approaches for building unique and sustainable practices with the CCM singer.

Justin’s article, “Managing Vocal Endurance Through Active Recovery,” is featured in the January/February 2024 Issue of the Journal of Singing. The article addresses the evolving demands of operatic, musical theatre, and popular styles of singing, and the need for active recovery both during and after vocal activities.

This September, Justin was invited to present his recent research at The Barcelona Conference on Education. His paper, “Rate of Perceived Vocal Exertion and Vocal Loading Tendencies in Group Fitness Professionals,” aimed to determine the rate of perceived vocal exertion experienced by group fitness instructors stratified by age and sex. The findings will lay the groundwork for future research examining the long-term effects of vocal loading in the group fitness setting. The significance of this study will determine the impact increased vocal loading has on GFIs, particularly as it relates to overall levels of vocal health and an individual's rate of perceived vocal exertion.

Justin was named one of Pacific Business News’ 2023 Business of Pride honorees for his work as Executive Director of Hawaii Performing Arts Festival. The 6th Annual Business of Pride awards recognize outstanding LGBTQ business leaders, allies, or advocates in Hawaii who are making a difference in advancing equality and inclusion in the business world, as well as being active members of the community.

Justin’s article, “Building Versatile Voices,” is featured in the September/October 2023 Issue of the Journal of Singing. Through a systematic approach to versatility training, Justin addresses practices that support increased levels of vocal efficiency and sustainability.

The NYU Pop/Rock Ensemble took home its third DownBeat Award 46th Annual Downbeat Student Music Awards. The group earned awards for Outstanding Blues/Pop/Rock Group. Founded by Justin 2019, the NYU Pop/Rock Ensemble has quickly earned recognition as one of the leading contemporary collegiate ensembles in the nation.

On March 23, NYU Steinhardt Dean Jack Knott announced news of Justin’s promotion to Associate Professor, citing his “breadth of work as a researcher, author, and performer.” Justin will begin his tenure as Associate Professor on September 1, 2023. In addition, Justin will maintain his role as Associate Director of Vocal Performance and Coordinator of Vocal Pedagogy.

Under the direction of Justin, the DownBeat Award-winning NYU Pop/Rock Ensemble was recently named a “Cool Course” and featured in the news by New York University.

This spring, Justin jumps into the Red Room at Barry’s Bootcamp NYC where he will present a series of Vocal Athlete Seminars for the New York trainers. The workshops will focus on vocal health, wellness, and optimizing endurance.

The Boston Sings Festival has announced Justin as their 2022 Featured Educator.
